
Before you reach into the tub or behind the machine, turn the dishwasher off at the breaker or unplug it under the sink. A dishwasher combines standing water with electrical components, and the drain pump can start unexpectedly on some models even mid-cycle. Bail out the standing water with a cup and towels first so you're not working blind. Never remove the outer door panel or base pan to probe wiring or test components with the power on - that's where our job starts.
1. Clogged filter or sump
The filter at the bottom of the tub catches food debris before water reaches the pump, and it's the single most common reason for standing water. When the mesh packs up with grease, seeds, pasta, or paper from jar labels, water simply can't get through to the drain pump fast enough - or at all. Most filters twist out by hand in seconds, and many owners have never removed theirs.
DIY checks: Twist out the cylindrical filter and lift the flat mesh screen (check your door sticker or manual for the exact release). Rinse both under hot water with a soft brush and dish soap. With the filter out, shine a light into the sump opening and pull out any visible debris with your fingers - power off first. Reinstall, run a short cycle, and see if the water clears.
When to call a pro: If the filter is clean but water still stands in the sump, the blockage is deeper - in the pump or hose - and clearing it means tipping the machine and opening the base. That's where we take over.
2. Garbage disposal problems - including the knockout plug
In most South Bay kitchens the dishwasher drains into the garbage disposal, so a full or blocked disposal backs water straight up into the tub. And if the dishwasher stopped draining right after a new disposal was installed, there's a classic culprit: every new disposal ships with a solid knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet, and installers forget to punch it out more often than you'd think.
DIY checks: Run the disposal for 15-20 seconds with cold water flowing, then start a dishwasher drain cycle. If the machine has never drained since a disposal was installed, disconnect the dishwasher hose from the disposal (bucket underneath) and look into the inlet - a solid plug means the knockout was missed. It can be punched out with a screwdriver and hammer with the disposal unplugged.
When to call a pro: If you're not comfortable disconnecting the hose or working around the disposal wiring, we handle it as part of a standard drain diagnosis - it's a quick fix for us and a common find.
3. Kinked or clogged drain hose
The corrugated drain hose runs from the pump, up the cabinet wall, and over to the sink drain. Grease and food sludge settle in its low spots and narrow the passage over time, and a hose pinched behind the machine or crushed under the sink chokes flow the same way a kinked garden hose does. The high loop near the countertop is a favorite spot for buildup because gunk has to climb it on every cycle.
DIY checks: Open the sink cabinet and inspect the visible run of hose - straighten any kinks and make sure nothing stored under the sink is crushing it. Confirm the hose rises in a high loop before dropping to the drain. If the hose looks flattened or you can feel a hard blockage in the accessible section, note where it is.
When to call a pro: Clearing or replacing the full hose means pulling the dishwasher out from the cabinet and disconnecting it at the pump. We do that routinely - forcing a snake through a corrugated hose from the sink side usually punctures it.
4. Air gap clogged
If you have a chrome cylinder on the back corner of your sink, that's an air gap - a backflow-prevention fitting the dishwasher drains through. Debris collects inside it, and when it clogs, water either backs up into the tub or sprays out of the air gap's vents during the drain cycle. It's one of the easiest fixes on this list.
DIY checks: Twist or pull off the chrome cap, remove the inner cover, and clear any visible gunk with a paper towel or bottle brush. Run a drain cycle and watch it - steady flow with no overflow means you've found your problem.
When to call a pro: If the air gap is clear but water still spits out of it, the blockage is downstream in the hose to the disposal - a pull-and-clear job we handle at the same visit as the rest of the diagnosis.
5. Drain pump failure or jam
The drain pump is a small electric motor with an impeller that pushes water out of the sump. A shard of broken glass, a fruit pit, or a popsicle stick can jam the impeller solid - you'll often hear a hum or grinding instead of the normal drain sound. Pumps also simply wear out: a dead pump makes no sound at all when the cycle reaches the drain stage.
DIY checks: Listen at the end of a cycle: a healthy pump makes a steady whir as water leaves. Grinding, humming, or silence points to the pump. With power off and the filter removed, you can look and carefully feel into the sump for glass - use a towel over your fingers, glass shards hide in there after a breakage.
When to call a pro: Anything beyond that - removing the pump, testing whether the motor gets voltage, replacing it - requires opening the base of the machine and working around live-circuit checks. This is squarely a technician job, and it's one of our most common dishwasher repairs.
6. Check valve stuck
Many dishwashers have a small one-way check valve at the pump outlet or in the drain line. Its job is to let dirty water out while stopping it from flowing back into the tub after the pump shuts off. When the valve sticks shut with debris, the pump strains against a closed door; when it sticks open or fails, drained water seeps back in - so you find water in the tub hours later even though the cycle seemed to drain fine.
DIY checks: The telltale sign you can spot yourself: the dishwasher drains audibly at the end of the cycle, but water reappears in the tub overnight. That pattern points at the check valve rather than a clog.
When to call a pro: The valve sits at the pump outlet under the machine, so confirming and replacing it means the same base-level disassembly as pump work. If you're seeing the water-returns-later pattern, save yourself the parts guessing - we'll pinpoint it in one visit.
