GE washers fail in predictable places because of how they're built. On top-load models, a mode shifter switches the transmission between agitate and spin, and when it wears out you get a washer that fills, drains, and hums but never spins the clothes dry — the single most common GE top-load complaint we see. Hydrowave models add an inverter-driven motor that depends on clean signals from the control board, while GE front-loaders tend toward the classic front-load problems: torn door boots that leak onto the floor and drum bearings that turn the spin cycle into a jet engine. Because GE washers are installed in so many South Bay rentals and homes, they also tend to rack up heavy use fast.
We start by pulling error codes through GE's built-in service mode, but codes only point at a neighborhood — they don't name the failed part. So we confirm with real tests: checking the mode shifter's actual movement, verifying lid lock continuity, running the drain pump directly. GE washer won't spin or agitate
On GE top-loads, agitate and spin are two positions of the same mode shifter, so a failed shifter usually kills one function while the other still works — the washer drains fine but the basket never turns. On Hydrowave models the motor itself is inverter-driven, which means a dead motor, a bad inverter, or a control board that stopped sending commands can all produce the same silent tub. We test the shifter and motor circuit directly instead of swapping boards on a hunch.
GE washer won't drain or leaves clothes soaking wet
A GE washer that finishes the cycle with standing water almost always has a drain pump problem — either the pump motor has failed or something is jammed in the impeller. Clothes that come out wet but the water is gone usually mean the opposite: the washer drained but never reached full spin speed, which points back at the mode shifter, an out-of-balance detection issue, or a lid lock cutting the cycle short. The two symptoms look similar and have completely different causes, which is why we check where the cycle actually stopped.
GE front-load washer leaking or banging during spin
GE front-loaders leak most often from the door boot — the rubber bellows tears or grows a fold that traps water, and it drips at the front of the machine during wash or spin. A loud rumble or banging at high spin speed is usually the drum bearings, and on most GE front-load designs that's a major teardown, so we tell you honestly what the job costs before you commit. Sometimes a bearing repair makes sense; sometimes it doesn't, and we'll say so.
GE washer lid locked shut or flashing an error
GE top-loads won't spin — and often won't finish a cycle — if the lid lock assembly can't confirm the lid is closed and latched, so a worn lock produces everything from a stuck lid to a washer that quits mid-cycle. Error codes stored in the machine are readable through GE's service mode and tell us which circuit complained: lock, motor, water level, or board. We read the codes, then verify the actual component before replacing anything.
