Kenmore has never built an appliance. Since 1927 it has been a retail badge: Sears bought machines from other factories and sold them under one name. A Kenmore washer may be a Whirlpool, an LG, or a Frigidaire underneath, and the three-digit prefix on the model number is what tells them apart. For us that means the first step on any Kenmore call is reading the tag, not the logo. Everything after that — parts, teardown sequence, likely failure — follows from the builder, not the badge.
The three digits in front of the model number decide the repair
Every Kenmore carries a model number whose first three digits name the factory that actually built it: 110 is Whirlpool, 796 is LG, 363 is GE, 253 is Frigidaire, with Panasonic, Electrolux and other suppliers filling in across the decades. That prefix is not trivia. It tells us whether a washer has a Whirlpool-style suspension and shifter or an LG direct-drive rotor bolted to the back of the tub. We read it off the door jamb, tub rim or rear panel before quoting anything, because a diagnosis based on the badge instead of the prefix is a guess wearing a confident face.

Elite and Pro rank the price list; the builder's catalog stocks the parts
Elite and Pro describe where a unit sat on the Sears price list, not who welded the cabinet. An Elite front-loader and an Elite refrigerator from the same catalog year can come out of two different manufacturers on two continents. The tier does tell us feature depth — Elite generally means inverter drives, more sensors and more board logic; Pro meant stainless commercial styling and heavier trim. It also predicts what will be hard to buy. Mechanical and electrical parts cross-reference to the builder's own number and are usually obtainable; what disappears are the Sears-specific pieces no other manufacturer ever cataloged.

There is no single Kenmore diagnostic routine. A 110 top-loader enters service mode through a Whirlpool button sequence and reports F and E codes; a 796 front-loader speaks LG's code set and expects rotor and stator resistance checks; GE- and Frigidaire-built units each have their own entry method and their own code table. The wiring diagram folded into the console or behind the toe panel belongs to the builder, not to Sears, and that is the document we work from. Because these machines span decades in South Bay homes, we also weigh repair cost against what the platform has left.

We name all of them here because naming them is how a Kenmore repair is actually diagnosed. Not one of them vets, backs or endorses the work we do.
Kenmore repair questions
On the model number tag, and the first three digits are what matter. On washers and dryers the tag is usually under the lid, on the door jamb, or on the back panel near the top. On refrigerators it is typically on the inner liner wall or under a crisper drawer; on ranges, on the frame behind the storage drawer or on the oven door frame. If you can photograph the whole tag before we come out, we arrive already knowing which platform we are working on.
It changes almost everything practical. The builder determines the drive system, the fault codes, the order the panels come off, and which part number actually fits. Two Kenmore washers with the same capacity and similar controls can share no significant components at all. Two, usually, and sometimes two continents. Sears sourced each product category separately, so a 110-prefix Whirlpool-built washer can sit twenty feet from a 795-prefix LG-built refrigerator with nothing in common but the logo on the front. We ask for the prefix on each machine rather than assuming that what we learned in your laundry room applies in your kitchen.
In our experience the usual cause is a part matched to the Kenmore number instead of the builder's number. Listings that promise to fit a range of Kenmore models are common, and a look-alike board, valve or sensor built for a different platform will physically mount and still behave wrong. When we take over one of these, we confirm the prefix first, verify what is actually installed against the builder's own part number, and tell you what has to come back out.
Partly, and it is worth the phone call. Read us the full model number with the first three digits and describe the symptom, and we can usually narrow it to a platform and its typical failure points — an LG-built front-loader with a drive complaint points somewhere quite different than a Whirlpool-built top-loader with the same complaint.
