In a Sub-Zero with dual refrigeration, the freezer runs on its own compressor and evaporator, so it can fail outright while the refrigerator stays perfectly cold. The freezer circuit also carries a load the fridge side doesn't: the integrated ice maker, usually the first thing owners notice going quiet when freezer temperatures start to slip. Frost tells most of the story on these units — where it forms and how it looks points to a gasket, a defrost fault, or a sealed-system problem.
We read those signs before touching parts: compartment and coil temperatures, defrost components tested electrically, gasket condition on those heavy panel doors, and condenser airflow. A thin, even frost is normal; heavy frost concentrated along the door edge or packed on the back wall is a symptom. New noises usually come from motors under strain. An evaporator fan clipping built-up ice makes a rhythmic scrape or chirp, a condenser fan with dry bearings hums and rattles, and a compressor that never cycles off is compensating for heat leaking in or cooling capacity leaking away.
