Viking builds its gas ovens around a hot surface igniter paired with a safety gas valve: the valve physically cannot open unless the igniter is drawing enough current, and there is no pilot or manual-light fallback. That design is why the most common Viking oven failure confuses owners — the igniter glows orange the way it always has, but the oven never heats. Igniters weaken gradually over years of heat cycles, and the glow is the last thing to go.
We diagnose with a meter, not by swapping parts. Current draw at the igniter tells us within minutes whether the fault is the igniter itself, the safety valve, or the control side, so the written quote you approve covers the component that actually failed.
Viking oven glows but won't heat
This is the classic weak-igniter symptom. The bake igniter can glow visibly and still fall short of the amperage the gas safety valve needs to open, and because Viking's current-sensing safety system has no manual light option, a marginal igniter means the valve stays closed and the oven stays cold. Measuring the igniter's actual draw confirms it in one test.
Viking oven preheats slowly or bakes unevenly
An igniter on its way out may open the safety valve late in each heating cycle, so the burner runs less than the control is calling for. Preheat stretches out, temperatures drift mid-bake, and food comes out uneven before the oven ever fails completely. Heat escaping past a worn door gasket produces similar complaints, which is why we check both.
Viking convection fan making noise
A squeal, tick, or grind from the back of the oven cavity during convection modes almost always comes from the fan assembly. Motor bearings dry out with heat exposure, and a blade that has loosened or shifted will contact the housing. Caught early it is a straightforward motor or blade replacement rather than a bigger job.
Viking range burners clicking or not lighting
Surface burners on Viking professional ranges use spark ignition, so endless clicking, no spark at one burner, or sparking that continues after the flame is lit points to the ignition system rather than the gas supply. Moisture after a deep clean causes many of these calls; a failed spark module or fouled electrode causes the rest.
