6 Common Dryer Problems: DIY Checks and When to Call a Pro
Most dryer complaints fall into a handful of categories. Here's what actually causes each one, what's reasonable to check yourself, and when it's genuinely time to call a technician instead of guessing further.

Before touching anything: unplug the dryer, and on a gas model, treat the gas line as something you don't disconnect yourself. Everything below assumes the power is off while you're looking inside or behind the unit.
1. Dryer not heating up
The dryer runs and tumbles normally, but clothes come out just as damp as they went in. This is one of the most common calls we get, and the causes are fairly predictable.

DIY checks: Confirm the breaker hasn't tripped, and that both legs of power are reaching the dryer if it's electric (a dryer can still tumble on partial power but not heat). Check the lint filter and vent aren't fully blocked, since severe restriction can trip the thermal fuse and mimic a heating failure.
When to call a pro: Heating elements and gas valve components sit behind the cabinet and require testing with a multimeter to confirm before replacing — and gas components specifically should be serviced by a qualified technician rather than tested by trial and error.
2. Dryer takes forever to dry
The dryer heats and runs fine, but you're running the same load through two or three cycles to get it dry. This is almost always an airflow problem rather than a heating problem.

DIY checks: Clean the lint filter before every load if you don't already. Pull the dryer out and check the vent hose isn't crushed or kinked, and check that outside vent flap actually opens and moves air when the dryer runs.
When to call a pro: If the vent is clear and drying is still slow, it's worth having a technician check whether the heating element or thermostat is producing full heat rather than continuing to guess with longer cycles.
3. Dryer won't start
You press start and nothing happens, or the dryer hums but doesn't run. A few different components can cause this, and they're not all obvious from the outside.

DIY checks: Firmly close the door and listen for the latch, then try again. Check the outlet and breaker. If another appliance works fine on the same outlet, the dryer itself is more likely the issue.
When to call a pro: Testing a door switch or start switch safely means checking continuity with a multimeter — if you don't have one or aren't comfortable using it, that's a reasonable point to hand off.
4. Dryer making loud noises
Squealing, thumping, or grinding usually points to a worn mechanical part rather than anything electrical. What matters most for diagnosis is when in the cycle the noise happens.

DIY checks: Stop the dryer and check inside the drum and around the door seal for coins, buttons, or small items. Note whether the noise happens at startup, throughout the cycle, or once per drum rotation — that detail alone often points to the cause.
When to call a pro: Rollers, pulleys, glides, and belts are all inside the cabinet, so replacing any of them means partially disassembling the dryer. This isn't usually a simple swap.
5. Drum isn't spinning
The dryer powers on and you may hear the motor, but the drum itself doesn't turn. Clothes just sit against the heating vent, which can also scorch them if it runs long enough.

DIY checks: Listen closely — a motor that hums but the drum doesn't move usually means a broken or slipped belt. Total silence more often points to power, the motor itself, or a safety switch.
When to call a pro: Both the belt and the motor are inside the cabinet. Turn the dryer off rather than let it run with a stuck drum against the heat source.
6. Dryer won't shut off
The cycle ends, or should have, and the dryer just keeps running. This one is worth taking seriously rather than just letting it run out.

DIY checks: Try a different cycle type — if timed dry behaves normally but auto/sensor dry doesn't stop, that points toward the moisture sensor rather than the timer.
Never leave a dryer that won't shut off running unattended, and don't leave the house with it on. Continuous, unregulated heat is a real fire risk, not just an inconvenience — unplug it and call for service.

Clean the lint filter after every load — that part's non-negotiable. The vent line itself (the duct running from the back of the dryer to the outside) is worth having cleaned roughly once a year for most households, more often if you dry a lot of loads, have a long or bent vent run, or have noticed drying times creeping up.
Yes. A restricted vent traps lint and heat inside the dryer instead of letting it exhaust outside, and lint is highly flammable. This is well documented enough that fire-safety authorities and dryer manufacturers both list vent cleaning as standard maintenance, not an optional extra.
A brief, faint smell at ignition can be normal on some gas dryers. A strong or ongoing gas smell is not — that's a sign to stop using the dryer, avoid switches or open flame, ventilate the area, and contact your gas utility or a qualified technician rather than troubleshooting it yourself.
That timing is useful diagnostic information. Noise only at startup often points to the belt or motor engaging; noise throughout the whole cycle is more consistent with worn drum support rollers or a glide; a noise tied to the drum's rotation (once per turn) often means something is caught between the drum and the cabinet. Mentioning when the noise happens helps a technician narrow it down before they even arrive.
Mechanically, some homeowners do. But both jobs involve disassembling the cabinet, and gas valve work specifically involves a gas connection, which is worth leaving to a qualified technician for safety reasons. If you're not confident opening the cabinet and identifying the part correctly, it's a reasonable one to have diagnosed and repaired professionally.
A thermal fuse is a safety component that cuts power to the dryer if it detects it's running hotter than it should — most often because airflow is restricted by a clogged vent or lint filter. It's designed to blow rather than let the dryer overheat, so a blown thermal fuse is often a symptom of an airflow problem, not just a part that randomly failed. Replacing the fuse without addressing the airflow issue usually means it blows again.
It depends on the cause. A slipped or broken drum belt is a common, relatively straightforward repair. A failed drive motor is a bigger job. Both need the cabinet opened to diagnose properly, so it's hard to say which one you're dealing with without a technician actually looking at it.
