On the heat side, the element coils in electric models eventually burn open, and the thermal fuse blows when a restricted vent lets the dryer overheat.

GE dryer not heating
On electric GE dryers, the heating element is a set of coiled wires that eventually burn open — the drum tumbles, but clothes come out cold and damp. The other frequent culprit is the thermal fuse, a one-time safety device that blows when the dryer overheats, almost always because the vent is restricted with lint. We test the element for continuity, check the fuse and thermostats, and inspect the venting, because a new fuse in a dryer that still can't breathe will just blow again.
GE dryer squealing or squeaking
A squeal that gets louder as the load gets heavier is the classic GE symptom: the drum rides on a rear bearing, and when that bearing wears, metal starts complaining. The front drum slides wear out too, which adds a scraping or thumping note as the drum drops slightly out of position. The proper fix is a rear bearing kit and fresh slides — and since the dryer is already open, we check the belt and idler at the same time so you don't pay for a second teardown.
GE dryer drum not turning
If the motor hums but the drum sits still — and the drum spins with almost no resistance by hand — the drive belt has snapped. The idler pulley that keeps tension on that belt wears out too, and it usually squeaks for a while before it lets go. We replace the belt, check the idler, and inspect the drum bearing and slides while the cabinet is open, since a dragging drum is often what killed the belt in the first place.
GE dryer takes too long to dry
Long dry times are usually an airflow problem, not a broken dryer: a lint-packed vent line can double cycle times and slowly cook the thermal fuse. But on electric GE models there's a second possibility — one section of the element coils burns out while the other survives, leaving weak heat that feels almost normal. We measure airflow and heat output to tell the two apart instead of guessing.
