The direct-drive motor and the linear compressor

Most washers spin the drum with a belt off a conventional motor. LG bolts a brushless rotor to the drum shaft, puts the stator behind the tub, and reads rotor position continuously with hall sensors. Nothing wears the way a belt or a coupler does, but the machine now depends on those sensor signals and on the inverter drive being correct. Refrigeration applies the same thinking to compression: instead of a rotary compressor turning a crank, a piston runs on a spring resonance and modulates capacity rather than cycling on and off. Both designs are quieter and more efficient, and both tend to fail electrically before they fail mechanically.

That history changes how a no-cooling call has to be handled. The onboard diagnostics will flag the condition, but a warm compartment is a symptom shared by the damper, the evaporator fan, the defrost circuit, and the sealed system, and only measurement separates them.
